2019 Villa Maria "Taylors Pass" Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough

SKU #1500611 95 points Bob Campbell

Outer quote mark Flavoursome, punchy sauvignon blanc with gooseberry, green capsicum, tomato leaf, passionfruit and a suggestion of oyster-shell-mineral character. A vibrant, high-energy wine with assertive acidity driving a lengthy finish. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Superb wine with notes of flint, herbs, peach, nectarine and honeysuckle. The flavours continue for quite a while on the palate. Really lovely, impressive and complex stuff, topped and tailed by lemony acidity. (CD) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

95 points Sam Kim

Outer quote mark Combining impressive fruit intensity with textural mouthfeel, the wine shows nectarine, feijoa, lemon/lime zest and fresh fig aromas on the nose. It's equally satisfying on the palate with bright fruit flavours and fine texture, finishing splendidly long and appealing. Inner quote mark (4/2020)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Hints of green tomato and bell pepper appear on the nose of the 2019 Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Sauvignon Blanc. Thankfully, those are backed by a solid core of stone fruit and grapefruit, providing a sense of balanced ripeness to this medium-bodied offering. There's a plush silkiness to the texture on the palate and a lingering, vibrant, citrusy finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

Taylor’s Pass is one of the best Sauvignon Blancs, made by one of the best producers, from one of the best vineyards in all of New Zealand. Villa Mariadates back to 1962--long before the Sauvignon Blanc boom of the early 80’s. But throughout Marlborough’s transformation to a globally recognized wine powerhouse, Villa Maria has continued to produce exceptional wines across a variety of price points and earned its title as New Zealand’s “most -awarded winery”. The Taylor’s Pass is the highest level Sauvignon Blanc they produce, named for the road the cuts through the Wither Hills of Marlborough, connecting the Wairau Valley to the north with the Awatere Valley to south. The vineyard’s juxtaposition, laid out across a sequence of terraces overlooking the Awatere River, is ground-zero for the best vine real estate in the Awatere Valley. The results of which are totally apparent in the glass: there is no mistaking this for a your average Kim Crawford. Instead, this wine shows an almost decadent level of richness. This is not elegant, austere Sauvignon Blanc, it’s hedonistic Sauvignon Blanc with the flavors turned up to 11. Tropical driven aromas of preserved pineapple, guava, and with apricot and stone fruit shine above a creamy, full weighted texture. Lush and rich on the palate this is viscous and weighted. There’s not an ounce of greenness on this, the tropical and stone fruit flavors fully dominate the palate. Just having this in my glass has me wishing for a pan roasted Mahi Mahi and with spicy mango salsa. Pairing it with this wine would be an absolute knockout.

Clean, long easy finish that has supple, refreshing flavors. I get honey, green apple, melon, honeycomb and nectarine flavors from this light and easy to drink Sauvignon Blanc. Really it's everything you expect and want from a SB. Buy, drink and enjoy!

NZ does SB, that's just how it is. Excellent example of what New Zealand can deliver with its trademark white grape. Screaming acidity, soft textural nuance, and full throttle flavor that develops at pace create a wonderful chemistry for a bottle at this price point. Lemon and lime and passion fruit and white stone and grassy tones crash into a long finish that plays out every combo before it's bow. Killer Juice.
