SKU #1499482 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Clearly standing out in this line-up, an impressive, well-crafted wine with great tannic hold; a wine you would be thrilled to own. Cassis, bilberry, blackberry, hawthorn, black chocolate, slate. Great texture and balance, and full of St-Estèphe signature. Great stuff. (JA) Inner quote mark (6/2020)

Outer quote mark Under the same management as Château Léoville-Poyferré in Saint-Julien, this estate belongs to the Cuvelier family. With its structured Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is made to age. Big tannins and concentrated fruits are full and dense. *Cellar Selection* (RV) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

Outer quote mark The purity of the cabernet sauvignon is very evident here with currant and floral character. Full-bodied, firm and very polished with lovely, strong tannins. Muscular and polished. Give it three or four years to come together. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark Well-built, featuring dark plum and blackberry coulis flavors that impart a dark yet racy feel, while light charcoal, chalk and wet pebble notes keep the finish grounded in terroir. An echo of tobacco rings throughout. (JM, Web-2019) Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark From a notable Cru Bourgeois estate in Saint-Estephe that’s managed by the team at Léoville Poyferré, the 2016 Château Le Crock is 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in 25% new French oak. This rich, chewy, character-filled effort offers notes of jammy blackberries and meaty blackcurrants as well as notes of tobacco and cedar, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

K&L Notes

Here is a property we first tasted and bought in the 1985 vintage—a Bill Blatch favorite and now owned by the Cuvelier family, who also own Léoville-Poyferré. Making old style wines in the past, the property has really improved, and this 2016 is superb—packed with red berry fruit. It was a great vintage in St-Estèphe, and this wine will cellar well for a long time. Decant one hour if you try it in 2021.

This big, rustic and grippy wine has all the rich fruit you would expect from the team at Leoville-Poyferre but maintains the hearty and bold character of a classic St-Estephe. Dark purple in color, with aromas of damp clay and flavors of raspberries and blackberries, this offers a chewy mouthful of ripe fruit backed by substantial tannins. Plenty of decanting and hearty fare are recommended for tonight but this is a huge bargain for the cellar.
