Its deep purple color is followed by terrific notes of ripe blackberries, toasted spice, and dried herbs, with a hint of graphite. Born in the north of France to a stonemason father, it would have been easy for Xavier Vignon to carve out his future in the same skilled trade, but he eventually chose to work around other stones- the large white galets that dapple the vineyards of Chateuneuf-du-Pape and the limestone rich cliffs of the Dentelle de Montmirail that shadow the vines in Gigondas. From tasting an impressive range of his recent vintages, I'm glad he traded his stonemason's chisel for a cellarmaster's pipette. His remarkable 2016 Gigondas states on the black label "Made in Rhone with Love", but it's also made with great skill in the meticulous election of fruit, reflecting Xavier Vignon's deep knowledge of the region and its terroirs. Imbued with elegant spice and violets intermingled with copious black and red fruits ensconced by rich tannins, this brilliant wine will develop nicely over the next ten years.

This is simply delicious and starts with very lifted aromas that soar right out of the glass. The wine is fruity and lively: filled with nori, cracked pepper, spiced red berries and ripe cherries that carry right through the long warm finish.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
