2016 Skylark "Rodgers Creek Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Syrah (Previously $45)

SKU #1498842 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark From a great vineyard in Sonoma, the 2016 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard was 75% destemmed and spent 20 months in barrels. Côte Rôtie-like notes of spiced black raspberries, cured meats, ground pepper, and flowers all emerge from the glass of this medium to full-bodied red, which has a core of sweet fruit and a great finish. K&L Notes

This micro production winery is spearheaded by two wine industry veterans cum San Francisco taste makers; John Lancaster and Rob Perkins. Together they built the wine program at the historic SF restaurant Boulevard. Along with legend winemaker David Ramey, Skylark is one of two wineries that source fruit from the hallowed Rodgers Creek: one of the best Syrah vineyards in California. The vineyard is nestled in the hills above Petaluma in the Sonoma Coast appellation. Their block is a gently sloping hillside at 800 feet elevation planted to a Cote-Rotie clone specifically selected for this site.125 cases produced.

As a self proclaimed Syrah fanatic, I get very excited to see Rodger's Creek vineyard on a bottle from two seasoned wine professionals that share a love as deep as mine for this powerful variety from the Rhone. Nestled on the volcanic wind swept hills above the Petaluma Gap, Rodger's Creek vineyard yields powerful and textured Syrah that nods to some of the great wines of Côte Rôtie. Dark spicy berries, creamy blue fruit, savory olives, cured meats, and dashes of white pepper and violets layer the glass in this 2016 bottling from Skylark. With a long and powerful finish that will leave you craving another glass... or two.

If you're going to drink wine, make it compelling. Our offer for this wine is quite compelling on two levels. First, this is world class Syrah from a top-site made by wine industry veterans. Second, we're offering it at over 40% off the winery price. How in the world do you expect to get all this Syrah goodness for $25.00? It's brimming with raspberry, blackberry, white pepper, olive tapenade and a hint of wood spice. The silky texture coats the palate and leaves you with a long and flavorful finish. Fanatics...I give this my strongest "buy" recommendation.

The Colder Seasons are around the corner, and as I have mentioned numerous times, when it does get colder, I drink a lot of syrah this time of year. The 2016 vintage of Skylark's single vineyard Rodgers Creek Syrah will happily be in my lineup this year. Raspberry, blackberry, and touches of pepper define this rather delicious syrah under the 30 dollar price point., and while I like to think of the many food options you could have with this (ribs, steak, bbq), its also very enjoyable by itself. This bottle is definitely case worthy in your cellar.
