2017 Château de la Gardine Rasteau

SKU #1498669 93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Vibrant black cherry and plum preserves are etched by veins of dusty mineral and earth in this voluptuous but vibrantly balanced red. A blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah, it's peppery and focused, finishing on fine, firm tannins and a kick of acidity. Should improve through 2027. (AI) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark Not yet bottled, the 2017 Rasteau Brunel De La Gardine is fabulous all the way and is going to compete with the top wines in the appellation. Based on 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah brought up all in tank, this medium to full-bodied, pure, concentrated effort boasts a deep purple color as well as notes of blackberries, ground pepper, crushed flowers, and violets. It’s a beautiful wine and will keep for a solid 7-8 years. (91-93+) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

K&L Notes

We are pleased to welcome the wines of Chateau de la Gardine to our direct import portfolio. The Brunel family's roots in wine date back to the 17th century. Gaston Brunel acquired Chateau de la Gardine in 1945 and quickly made the estate one of the benchmark producers in the region. Tradition reigns at the estate and is encompassed by the signature Gardine bottle shape which is modeled after a hand-blown bottle found on the estate by Gaston. He loved the look so much that all their wines have been bottled in its replicas since 1964. The estate is now run by Gaston's sons Patrick and Maxime along with their children, Marie-Odile and Philippe. Using organic and sustainable practices, they farm over 50 hectares. The grapes in Rasteau are planted over a mix of sandstone, marl and clacareous soils. Average vine age ranges between 40-60 years. The Rasteau is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah. All fermentation and aging is done in a mix of stainless steel and concrete vats. As with all Gardine wines, the wine shows its classic nature in its youth and has the stuffing to age for many more years.

The French would describe this as Sauvage due to the amazing aromas of freshly picked wild raspberries and ripe blackberries right off the vine as well as damp underbrush and wildflowers: The wine is medium-bodied, lively and earthy, and has hints of forest floor as well as spice along with all that berry fruit. An utterly delicious wine that satisfies on many levels.

We recently added Chateau de la Gardine to our roster of Direct Imports. To many this winery was their first experience with Chateauneuf, made all the more memorable by the funky shaped heirloom bottle that stands out distinctly on a wine rack. Gardine has extensive plantings in Chateauneuf du Pape but they also own a small parcel in nearby Rasteau. On a hill overlooking the valley, the vines struggle through marl, sandstone and calcareous clays to deliver a deeply defined and characteristic Rasteau. This is meaty, brambly and utterly delicious. Such a classic Rhone-style your memory will call back your early experiences with Rhone wines and remind you why you started drinking them. There's a reason why we wanted Chateau de la Gardine and it's not just for that kooky bottle. It's little gems like this Rasteau that helped cement our relationship.
