Outer quote mark This is a delicate example of Central Otago, diverging from the archetypal style. Lifted, pure and intriguing, with festive spices, it is light in body, although the 14% alcohol brings a touch of weight to the midpalate. The aromatics wax and wane, offering violets, smoked paprika, and then along come orange peel and rhubarb on the next sniff, with cherries bringing up the rear. I’m a sucker for this wine’s intriguing scent, although I’d love a little more substance in terms of concentration if I’m being a nitpicker. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

Outer quote mark This wine is comfortable in its own skin, open and flaunting much of Otago Pinot's most charming attributes. Ribbons of bright berry fruit have savory, sappy bass notes and streaks of sassafras, crushed violets and baking spice. The Akitu A1 is a gorgeous expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir. The A1 is crafted from the best vineyard blocks on the estate and fermented with whole clusters of gently ripened Pinot Noir. The result is a more powerful expression of Pinot, structured with crunchy tannin and bright acidity that gives it the ability to improve with years to come. A quick decant, and the A1 is showing gorgeously already, but a few years in the cellar will turn this into something magical.
