This has a very attractive, fresh rose-petal nose with bright red cherries and berries, as well as anise and lightly stony notes. Pristine raspberries and cherries just grow and grow on the nose here. The palate has such beautifully proportioned tannins and a fine, chalky texture. Long, fresh, succulent and elegant with a long finish.

To balance Australia's natural tendency to richness, Stephen Pannell looks for skinnier varieties with high acidity and ample tannins. His portfolio of 'alternative' grapes is growing but Nebbiolo sits at the pinnacle. Besides working with GD Vajra, Pannell has invited a number of his Barolo-based friends to spend time at his winery in McLaren Vale. His experience and obsession are evident in the glass. This is a properly pale ruby colour with gorgeous purity and precision of rose, violets, cherry, raspberry and orange peel. The tannins are long and fine but unmistakably Nebbiolo, with an earthy, clay undercurrent. There's a ton of elegance here.

Hand-picked, 21 days fermentation/maceration, matured for 16 months in used puncheons. The grapes must have been ultra-expensive - all other costs are minimal. It's a light, bell-clear crimson, the flavours of red cherry and sour cherry, the tannins silky - a masterpiece.
