K&L Notes

Finca Mangata is the personal project from the former winemaker at Bodegas Caro, Estela Perinetti, a joint venture of Lafite Rothschild and Bodega Catena Zapata and sourced from her family's own vineyard in the El Peral District of Tupungato. These vines are at 4000 feet of elevation and extremely stoney "Alto des Piedras". 93 pts Descorchados "From 25-year-old vineyards planted on rocky soils in El Peral, this wine has the charm of the zone's Malbec, a place with streams, trees, and little mountains where Mondoza's desert seems to take a break. Here there are delicious juicy red fruits with very tame tannins and a refreshing finish. It needs time in the bottle to absorb the oak, but you could also drink it now and enjoy those flavors. Estela Perinetti is a winemaker from Mendoza with a long history with the Catena group of wineries. Now independent, she has launched this personal project based on a vineyard the family planted in the El Peral zone of the Uco Valley."

Look at this wine makers pedigree....look at the price of the bottle....check both those things again - You weren't mistaken, they just don't make a lot of sense. Wine that's this good, made by this sort of team should just cost a lot more than this. The weight is unassuming, but the flavor is exceptional, with red fruit galore and saffron and dried orange sliced wrapped loosely together with fine satin tannin that glides gracefully off the palate.

Every once in a while I'll be tasting something that Kirk our South America buyer is sampling as a potential acquisition and get a little too excited about it. Wine that just hits all the nostalgia points and is also just dang delicious is hard not to get excited about and this one really delivers. The nose opens with, bear with me, cotton candy. Not sickeningly sweet or overbearing but more like you walked past the cotton candy stall at Disneyland and just had to stop. Tons of wonderful fruit from orange peel, to blueberry the nose is basically pre-made Sangria and it's wonderful! The palate is just a fun and welcoming with the fruit mingling with a bit of nectarine, cinnamon, and a hint of savory soy to balance it all out. I don't know how a $16 wine gets more enjoyable than this!
