2017 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Pinot Noir Marlborough

SKU #1497351 95 points Sam Kim

Outer quote mark Splendidly stylish and complex, the bouquet shows dark cherry, thyme, game and toasted almond characters with nuances of mushroom and fragrant spice. It's wonderfully weighted and seamlessly flowing on the palate with terrific fruit purity together with seductive savoury undertones, leading to a superbly long velvety finish. Grapes were grown in Renwick and Southern Valleys districts. At its best: now to 2030. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is utterly delicious Pinot, delivering abundant spiced-cherry and blueberry-pastry aromas. This has an attractively composed and fleshy, ripe, dark-cherry and red-plum core with long, fresh and juicy drive on the palate. Such great fruit purity here. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This Pinot blends fruit from three vineyards including TWR’s home block of old, biodynamically farmed vines, and Clayvin, Giesen winery’s prized single vineyard. Anna and Jason Flowerday’s Pinot is vastly different than Giesen’s however. It’s more muscular, dark fruited and tautly wound, weaving plump plum and cherry fruit with savory and baking spice, bay leaf, clove and a lick of oatmeal-like oak. Tannins are powerful yet fine and chiseled. Should cellar beautifully until 2030 at least. Inner quote mark (6/2021)

93 points Bob Campbell

Outer quote mark Bright, fresh and flavoursome Pinot Noir with cherry, raspberry, red rose and spicy oak with a suggestion of savoury and dried herb character. An appealing and distinctive wine that is accessible now but should develop well with bottle age. Inner quote mark (1/2019)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A blend of fruit from the estate and two other certified-organic vineyards, the 2017 Pinot Noir displays sumptuous aromas of black cherries, cola, dried spices and dark loam. Medium-bodied and just starting to round into form at age four, the palate features concentrated fruit, a dusting of ripe tannins and a tart, mouthwatering finish. It should continue to drink well for at least another 4-5 years. (JC) Inner quote mark (4/2021)

TWR is easily one of my favorite Pinot Noir producers in all of New Zealand, and their TWR bottling of Pinot Noir is among my favorites. But the 2017 is something entirely different. Sourced from TWR’s SV5182 Vineyard, along with Giesen’s Ridge Vineyard and Clayvin Vineyard, this wine is made from three of the best Pinot Noir sites in Marlborough, period. The depth and focus of this on a completely different level. Brambles, black cherry and a subtle savory undertone on the nose give way to nuances of oak spice and game. The palate follows up with blackberry and cranberry in a punch of fruit and a sizzling finish of bright acidity and soft tannin. Utterly delicious, this easily sits in my Marlborough Pinot Noir hall of fame.
