2017 Fort Ross "Sea Slopes" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

SKU #1496416 90 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Made by Jeff Pisoni and sporting a vivid gold color as well as terrific notes of crushed citrus, white peach, and honeysuckle, the 2017 Chardonnay Sea Slopes is medium-bodied, beautifully textured, balanced, and vibrant on the palate. It's a terrific value in Sonoma Coast Chardonnay to drink over the coming year or two. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

90 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A slightly reduced nose here. The screw cap has wound this up a little, so give it some air. The palate has smoothly delivered fruit flesh and a luxurious core of pears. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Fermented in stainless steel and neutral barrels, the 2017 Chardonnay Sea Slopes has a fresh, open nose of Golden Delicious apple, sliced pear, white blossoms and baker’s yeast. Light to medium-bodied, it offers fresh fruit flavors with honeyed accents, juicy acidity and a long flavorful finish. (EB) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

This gem starts off with a gorgeous nose full of flinty minerality, bright stone fruit, and Meyer lemon. The palate hints at richness but then is buoyed by a seamless texture and a lifting acidity that lends a brilliant freshness and focus to the wine. It is shockingly light on its feet. The palate is laced with ripe pear and lime pith and fades into a mineral-tinged finish that carries through with a touch of white pepper. A joy for the upcoming warm weather, or anybody who loves refined, site-driven whites, Fort Ross' 2017 Sea Slopes will be tough to resist at this kind of pricing. Make sure to keep a few on hand.

We've been long-term partners with Fort Ross Vineyards here at K&L. We have long believed in and championed their exquisite wines from the rugged and remote Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. When the opportunity arose to take a chunk of their aptly named "Sea Slopes" Chardonnay for a super low price, we jumped on it. Coming mostly from their estate plus some neighbors, this offers top notch, true Sonoma Coast Chardonnay for a bargain price. Vibrant and fresh with lovely cool, coastal acidity and saline minerals. The wine was fermented mostly in a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel with just 5% seeing any new oak. The wine is alive with spring blossom, crunchy orchard fruits, honeysuckle, lemon curd, and baker's yeast. Wonderful concentration of flavor from low yielding vines, and a salty, sea spray sense of place. Hugely over-delivers in the sub-$20 zone, this is a daily drinker for folks who enjoy and more elegant, vibrant style of California Chardonnay.
Top Value! Drink from 2020 to 2025
