This is like nothing else on the shelf. Kings County Distillery is a true craft operation and has proven a dedication to making whiskey with a strong, and unique personality. They are not trying to mimic Kentucky or Tennessee products and they don't sell themselves with flashy packaging or false storytelling. The first thing you notice when picking up the austere flask-shaped bottle is the deep brown color of the bourbon. They achieve this color by using smaller barrels, giving their distillate an increased amount of barrel contact during aging. This results rich, dark flavors in addition to the pleasing color. Maple, molasses, wood char, and oak dominate both the nose and the palate. Also unique in this bourbon is the two-grain mashbill. Kings County Bourbon is 80% corn and 20% malted barley. Using only these two grains makes for clean, un-muddled flavors. The barley is especially apparent on the finish. At 63.3% abv, you are getting a huge, balanced mouthful of flavor and heat. This is what craft distilling should be about...bold, unique, flavor forward and local-pride.
