I first stumbled across Vergelegen while reading a book on the history of Stellenbosch. The author waxes so profane about their wines that I was shocked I had never come across them before in the US. Overtime this became a bit of an obsession for me. Ultimately, we were able to source a handful of wines from them and I opened one with the staff a week ago. It was not disappointing. First, this has a decent amount of age on it. At seven years, this Bordeaux blend is well into its tertiary stage. Notes of cherry liquor, tobacco, and earth abound in the glass. The similarity to 2009 Bordeaux is astonishing. Rounded sweet fruit sits right at the core of this wine with plenty of complexity and aged character. Such a great wine. One of my colleagues swore up and down that this was Chateau Verdignan. A great wine that sits at the middle ground of Bordeaux, and more fruity new world styles.
