2017 Copia Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1495312 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Lush layers of baked cherry, blackberry and black currant meet with accents of licorice, star anise and cardamom on the nose. The palate's thick, rich mouthfeel manages to remain somewhat elegant, packing in dark roasted fruit, powerful baking spices and a comforting finish of vanilla and caramel. (MK) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

94 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals a deep purple color as well as Cabernet-dominated notes of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, bouquet garni, and lead pencils. Aged 20 months in 80% new French oak, this full-bodied, beautifully textured blend has ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

K&L Notes

Copia is a small winery in Paso Robles with huge ambitions! Their steep hillside estate is maturing into one of the most promising vineyards in the region, and they also make a handful of tiny production wines from other excellent vineyards on the central coast. This Cabernet from Santa Ynez was a huge highlight for me. It captures all the power and richness this area can produce but also retains wonderful balance and vibrancy. This is a producer to watch for sure. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)

This is filled with deep, plummy fruit in a plushily textured, full throttle style. There is a rich core of dark purple fruit in the layered middle , but also hints of tobacco, menthol and mineral that peek through all that decadence. This is quite balanced for the style and should appeal to many who appreciate the blue chip (expensive) Napa heavy hitters.

The Copia wines are new to me but WOW - they made a huge impact. After seeing a couple glowing write ups from Dunnuck and Wine Enthusiast on this 2017 Cabernet I sent a quick note to the winery seeing if they might be interested in working with us directly. From the first sip I knew this wine was a winner and that the big scores were entirely justified! It's a seriously impressive wine; made in a modern style with huge fruit concentration and power. Yet, at the same time it's incredibly fresh, vibrant and beautifully balance for such a big wine. Explosive aromatics showing lashings of blue and purple fruits, crème de cassis, crushed blueberry, mulberry, exotic spice, bitter-sweet chocolate and new leather. The palate delivers all that the nose suggests with a flowing, lush mid-palate and beautiful lift and energy driving the finish. This wine shows exactly what this region can do. It's a stunningly delicious, powerhouse Cabernet that never loses control or focus. This is on a par with some of the most iconic producers of the Central Coast and yet (for now at least) the price point is more than reasonable given the immense stature of this release.
