2017 Domaine Lafage "Bastide Miraflors" Côtes du Roussillon

SKU #1492915 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark A blend of 74% Syrah and 26% Grenache that was brought in a mix of tank and used barrels, the 2017 Bastide Miraflors has a fabulous minerality as well as terrific kirsch, black raspberry, wild fennel, white pepper, and hints of black licorice aromas and flavors. Pure, medium to full-bodied, silky, and seamless on the palate, it's perfectly balanced, and way over-delivers. Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Cotes du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is a 70-30 blend of Syrah and Grenache, aged in a combination of tanks and barriques. It has some Ribena-like aromas, then delivers waves of ripe cassis and blackberries. Full-bodied and concentrated, it remains fresh and streamlined on the palate, finishing in a soft flurry of dusty tannins. (JC) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine Lafage is housed in their facility just outside the city of Perpignan. One of the most advanced wineries in the region, Jean-Marc and his wife Elaine are crafting "must buy" wines from the region of Roussillon. The Bastide Miraflors is a blend of Syrah and old-vine Grenache. The vineyards for this wine are practicing organic with an average vine age of 55 years. Each year it remains one of our best sellers. We expect no less again.

Their is no hyperbole in saying Jean-Marc and Elaine Lafage have mastered the cost-to-quality wine. In sports, their wines would be the MVPs of one of the most winning team franchises on the fast track to Hall-of-Fame status. And, that's not just the Bastide Miraflors (which is our focus here). They make whites and reds with different grapes and varying degrees of price points. Each is masterful and brings something special to the team. Since the 2011 vintage, every wine has ranked as some of our most favored drinking among our customers and staff. These are generous wines but they always have a sense of typicity. And that typicity is what makes the Bastide Miraflors the biggest standout among this team of MVPs. This is the wine that has built this dynasty. Like every year, the Bastide is a mix of Syrah and old-vine Grenache coming from primarily schist and alluvial soils. The depth of the 2017 is as concentrated and rich as expected but with the classic robust character that drives Roussillon wines. That deep black fruit, the fig paste, the olive tapenade and crushed flowers define the regional characteristics. This is long on finish and of course in true Bastide fashion - low on price. The only drag with this release? It's a short offer. Only one shipment made it to our shores due to a distribution change this year. So stock up early and drink often. Because not to worry, when the 2017 runs out, this wine making dynasty is sure to follow up with an equally spectacular 2018.
