2018 Oxer Bastegieta "Iraun" Blanco Rioja

Outer quote mark The idea with the white 2018 Iraun is to produce a Viura with freshness and subtleness, aged in oak but without being overpowered by wood and creaminess. In reality, it's a Viura-based blend with some 20% other white varieties, Garnacha Blanca, Maturana Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, with only 12.5% alcohol and good freshness from an ancient plot of vines in the village of El Villar. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the fermentation started in stainless steel but finished in a combination of tinaja and a used 500-liter French barrel. The wine matured in barrel for 12 months. I was blown away by the purity and harmony of this white, its freshness and elegance. There is contained ripeness, floral aromas, elegant and nuanced. The palate is silky and crunchy; it has more tension (probably the other varieties, especially Maturana Blanca) and a dry, long and serious finish. Oxer had always wanted to make wines in La Rioja Alavesa, and in 2005 he moved to Laguardia. Convinced of the uniqueness of the area, Oxer decided this is the place where he wants to settle and further express the art of winemaking. The permaculture vineyards in La Rioja Alavesa are worked organically with biodynamic treatments, following the principle of regenerative agriculture. Man and mule work the land with great care and respect for the old vines, and the meticulous work in vineyard and winery culminates in extremely fresh and elegant wines. Old vines, natural acidity by picking early, little extraction, spontaneous fermentation and aging in a mix of vessels all contribute to achieving a fine-wine profile. Oxer invests each cent earned in buying old plots. 97% Viura, 3% Garnacha Blanca sourced from a vineyard in Elvillar (La Rioja Alavesa) at 600 meters. Fermentation starts in stainless steel tanks, using only indigenous yeast, and finishes in amphoras and used French oak barrels. The wine ages for another 12 months in French oak.
