2018 Château de la Négly "La Falaise" La Clape

SKU #1490832 94 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2018 Falaise is a winner and comes close to matching the stunning 2017. Based on Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan from the La Clape AOC, the Grenache and Mourvedre were aged in tank and the Syrah in 300-liter barrels. Beautiful cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as complex blood orange, spice, violet, and licorice notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, incredibly pure red that has silky tannins, beautiful balance, and a great, great finish. It’s a rocking little gem of a wine! Inner quote mark (6/2020)

Outer quote mark Aged in a combination of foudres and 300-liter barrels, the 2018 La Clape la Falaise reveals hints of cracked pepper, mixed berries and licorice on the nose. It's full-bodied and expansive in the mouth, rich and mouthfilling without being heavy or overdone, buttressed by silky tannins and ample depth of fruit. It's a lovely effort that should drink well for 4-5 years. (JC) Inner quote mark (6/2020)

Everything I've tasted from Negly has been flat-out delicious. "La Falaise" is a full-bodied, structured wine with the stuff to age, but enough acid lift to make it a pleasure now. Great notes of fig and balsamic glaze and blueberries and a hint of baked pie crust. It's so good.

We established a direct relationship with Negly a few years ago and they have always kindly given us great allocations of their highly desirable wines. From their single parcel icon bottlings to the workhorse "La Cote" they have always delivered some of the best wines produced in the south of France. It is always La Falaise though that delivers the highest QPR. For a mere $25 you can drink one of the best wines from Languedoc that is also reflects the uniqueness of its terroir. The 2018 Falaise is an amazing follow up to the legendary 2017. A little more lift and structure than the '17, the Falaise has a panoply of aromas ranging from candied blueberries to fig paste, to Mexican chocolate. But its the generous lift of acidity that keeps the wine from becoming too heavy or cumbersome. So much fun to drink now but worthy of a few in the cellar so you can truly discover just how amazing a value this truly is. Another stunning release from Negly!
