There’s nothing dimpled about the fruit; it’s just warm and plump, with tannins you can breathe and a palpable bristle of energy. The luscious blackberry fruit floods the crunchy acidity that keeps the wine bright and zesty. On the nose this super aromatic wine expresses cherry, cranberry, and raspberry notes. On the palate it's a very smooth, velvety, and silky Cab that shows itself to be a medium bodied, well structured wine expressing purple plum, dark chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, and black currant flavors. A soft finish of green peppercorn, and low alcohol (13.5%), allows the fruity characteristics to shine, and easily leaves me longing for more!

It’s clear to see why the Leeuwin Art Series Cabernet is one of Australia’s greatest Cabernets. Hailing from Margaret River and founded in 1973 with Robert Mondavi consulting, over the last forty years Leeuwin has been at the top of Australia’s bluechip producers, creating phenomenal Cabernet and Chardonnay, year after year. Margaret River was originally selected for wine growing due to remarkably similar conditions to Napa. And when you factor in the quality and price, these wines compete toe-to-toe with some of the best wines you’ll find in the US--at less than half the price. I was a huge fan of the 2013 Art Series Cab, and I loved the more elegant, aromatic 2014. But the 2015 is definitely closer in style to the power and finesse of 2013. Lifting the glass, there’s black cassis, dark cherry, charcoal, and a gorgeous bouquet of baking spices and oak. You can tell right off the bat this is going to be powerful. On the palate, this is mouth coating and rich, full of black fruits and exquisitely balanced with gentle acidic counterpoint. The tannins here are extremely fine, making it a pleasure to drink now and topped off with a finish that just carries and carries. There are few places on the global making new-world style wines of this caliber, and when you look at the value at its price point, I wouldn’t drink anything else.

One of the classic wines of the Margaret River. Pure Cabernet flavors with very little oak presence on the nose. Herbs and hints of mint in the background. Plums and blackberries on the palate, with bright fruits and a savory profile with some anise spice. The wine has a great palate texture with very smooth tannins and good length on the finish. Despite being ready to drink now I think there is good ageing potential here.This is not a fruit bomb but a subtle example of Cabernet Sauvignon that is not quite French or American, but perhaps uniquely Australian.

I thought the 2014 vintage was a steal, but the new vintage is a quick favorite of mine. This is high quality cab at a medium tier price point, especially considering our incredible deal at almost a half of prices found elsewhere. Smokey and bright red fruit aromas are prevalent, with more subtle vanilla, herbaceous, and cranberry notes appearing as the wine opens. The taste is full, warm, and lush with notes of red fruit, blackberries, and a noticeable but refined amount of French oak aging. While tannic and structured with an easy balance, the wine finishes long and earthy. At $40 this is a killer deal and shows great aging potential.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim. While many equate Aussie wines with “value,” there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
