2015 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino

SKU #1490052 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Beautiful ripeness, but also balance on the nose, which features cinnamon, dried cedar, dried plums, dark chocolate and licorice. Expansive and comprehensive on the palate with outward-veering tannins and lots of treacle-tart undertones. Chewy and decadent. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Here's an elegant and classic expression of the vintage. The Sesta di Sopra 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows solid balance with its dark fruit flavors offset by tart cherry and fresh menthol. The oak tones are nicely tucked in and integrated, offering substance that builds the wine's structure but does not take away from its elegance. Balanced acidity adds a pretty touch to the mouthfeel. Some 4,300 bottles were made. ML Inner quote mark (10/2020)

94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Deep red-ruby. Almost hypnotic aromas of ripe red cherry, black cherry-cola, incense, violet, dried rose and minerals. Structured and sweet red and darker fruit flavors are graceful and finely etched, picking up savory spice and floral elements with aeration. Perhaps a touch less multifaceted than some other Brunellos from this estate, but brimming with early appeal and enough balance to easily last another fifteen to twenty years in a good cellar. 93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Ample and round, sporting cherry, plum, earth and saline flavors. Well-mannered tannins are integrated, lending an overall impression of freshness. Fine length. Best from 2023 through 2040. 380 cases made, 150 cases imported. — BS Inner quote mark (6/2020)

90 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Sesta di Sopra is a 40ha property, yet only 1ha is planted for Brunello. Given its small size, it can be harvested quickly. Owner Ettore Spina looks for the moment of both sugar and phenolic ripeness, which in 2015 was on 23 September. While the nose shows relative restraint, the palate is exuberant, fleshy and concentrated. Hints of all-spice, iron and smoke overlay masses of sun-soaked summer berries, with supple tannins and a flattering glossy texture. Despite its gen erous alcohol, this is well-balanced.(MM) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

I have tasted this wine many times from when it was still juice until it’s release but it was in April of 2019 at Vinitaly that I was bowled over, the completed and bottled wine was amazing. The nose of the wine is incredible, it has a deep mesmerizing effect it’s a cauldron of wild herbs, wild cherry, plum and a hint of sauvage. On the palate the wine rolls across your tongue treating you to a lush richness where a savory intrigue emerges and adds to the wild cherry, plum and herb, plush yet buoyant and keeps your attention focused. The finish is vibrant there is a freshness and lift on the back end that makes this wine exceedingly memorable.

This intense, sleek wine is one of the most pure expressions of Sangiovese in the entire store. Lots of clean and ripe cherry fruit, an array of forest floor and herbal notes, the earthy Tuscan soil and a bounty of crushed, dried flower scents lead to a long, driven finish. Do yourself a favor and try not to finish the bottle: this is even better the 2nd day.

Impressive nose, with loads of ripe fruit, this is full-bodied with some tannin structure that gives this wine a backbone to age.The fruit is impressive, rich and concentrated. The wine boasts excellent length, with sweet ripe strawberries, black cherry, leather and a spicy nose with a little Tuscan dust and minerals on the finish. It is drinkable now, with a couple of hours in a decanter, or I would give this wine time to improve and continue to evolve for another ten years.
