2016 Aquitania "Lazuli" Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley

SKU #1489887 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark A Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo that spent 16 months in French barrels, one-third of them new. Cherry red in color. The fragrant nose includes herbs, mint and menthol with fresh black currant. Very classic in style but restrained on the palate, delivering fine, polished tannins, just the right acidity and a finish with a hint of pyrazine. A delicate wine with a notably intense aftertaste. This is the ideal Chilean Cabernet. (JH) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Warm berry aromas are vaguely furry and obtuse, not exact or precise. On the palate, this Old World-style Cabernet is direct and juicy, with zesty acidity creating tension. Red-currant and raspberry flavors are dry and racy on the finish, indicating that this will age well for at least another 10 years; drink through 2032. *Cellar Selection* (MS) Inner quote mark (11/2019)

90 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark This cabernet grows in the foothills of the Andes in Macul, just south of Santiago. On a steep rise to 2,100 feet above sea level, the vineyard was planted 30 years ago by Bruno Prats, Paul Pontallier and Felipe de Solminihac. The best selection from those estate vines now goes to Lazuli, filling this wine with bold flavors of pomegranate and woodland scents of forest floor. It’s fresh, with a satin-rich texture and an airy tannic grip. Inner quote mark (6/2020)

K&L Notes

93 points, Tim Atkin "Picked before the heavy rains that marred the 2016 vintage in central Chile, this Alto Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon has notes of mint and camphor, grassy undertones, layers of cassis and fresh tobacco, fine tannins, subtle oak and racy, refreshing acidity."

Aquitania is a wine project that I am shocked that I didn't know about. I am shocked that this has not been a staple here at K&L. What happened when Bruno Prat (Chateau Cos d'Estournel) and Paul Pontallier (Chateau Margaux), Ghislain de Montgolfier (CEO of Bollinger Champagne), got together in the Maipo Valley, Aquitania is what happened. Great French wine making and agronomy meet a great new world terroir. A place where New World ripeness and richness exists with classic earth, tobacco and spice of classic Bordeaux. This wine is the perfect combination of a great Napa Cab and a Great Bordeaux both from the 90's. I know that this dates me but there is something about this wine that scratches that perfect nostalgic itch for both wines at the same time. It is aromatics start Bordeaux all tobacco and spice and slowly reveals a darker berry Cabernet fruit.. It is complex and just a little reserved. The palate is just the opposite; the fruit pops! Deep intense, but not overwhelming fruit coats the palate and is then followed by a subtle spice, herb and other savory elements. The fruit is fresh and the wine has great structure but neither the tannins for the acid have an edge. The fruit, spice and herbs get intertwined with a bright earthy element on the very long finish. This is a wine that wants to be paired with a meal, but if you open it before hand, there might not be enough for dinner. Complex, forward and intriguing. This is a Cabernet for any style of Cabernet drinker.

For a realativly new-kid-on-the-block this Maipo Cabernet is where it's at right now for that high-end, old-school feel, with leather and pepper and fruit all wrapped up in a tightly-wound herbal core that seems primed to unwind beautifully over the next half-decade; though it's drinking incredibly well now with some air. Get one for a special dinner, get two for a friend that has great taste, or get a case and keep opening them over the next five as they develop. For the OG's and the Real Ones.
