SKU #1489884 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache (there's Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in there as well), the 2017 Legend Proprietary Red Wine is a delicious, plump, fruit-loaded beauty that displays chocolatey dark currants, plums, savory herbs, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. These carry to a full-bodied red with a rounded, mouthfilling texture, plenty of ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Drink this pleasure-bent, incredibly satisfying red blend over the coming 7-8 years or more. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

K&L Notes

96 points Tasting Panel: "Winemakers Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky were the hands and minds behind the latest vintage of this wine, which is more than deserving of its name. It’s a California red with a French accent, blending 46% Cabernet Sauvignon with 25% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre, and 10% Grenache; the Rhône varieties were grown on Westwood Estate’s biodynamically farmed Annadel Gap Vineyard, while the Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Sonoma and Napa valleys. Together, they create a wine that’s alert with Old World acidity as it unleashes a waterfall of violets, plum, and black cherry skin that cascades across the lush palate. Tannins are sheathed in dark chocolate and tempered by white pepper."

You probably have seen Westwood offers from us in the past. The wines just keep getting better and better and have been huge hits with our staff and customers alike. The aptly named "Legend" is rich, powerful, and positively packed with dense, dark, ripe fruit, exotic oak tones, bittersweet chocolate, and loamy earth. Ample and mouth-filling but also very polished and lush in texture. The blend, which seems a little unusual to read, makes perfect sense on the palate, and the masterful skills of Philippe Melka are on full display. Apparently, Melka was very excited when making this wine as it really allowed him the freedom and flexibility to make the wine he wanted to make without being restrained or limited to a certain varietal composition. Think of it in terms of an artist with every color in the spectrum available to him and a blank canvas on which to work. Westwood's wonderful, immaculately farmed, biodynamic estate provided most of the raw materials, and perfectionist winemaking did the rest. This is spectacular wine at the regular $50 price point. At our too-low-to-show, deeply discounted price, this is one of the deals of the year.

The 2017 Westwood "Legend" is an intriguing blend of Bordeaux and Rhône varieties, including Cabernet, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec. Rich and intense on the palate, with sweet dark berry fruit, mocha, and coffee notes. Full of layered spice and savory earthy tones, the wine is surprisingly smooth and effortless despite its full, luscious palate weight. It's a perfect example of the best of Sonoma, and at this much discounted price, it isn't likely to last very long on our shelves. The Westwood wines are made by world-renowned Philippe Melka, the prized winemaker and consultant for some of Napa's top properties. The biodynamic program at Westwood was organized and established by Philippe Coderey, who worked closely with Domaine M. Chapoutier in the Rhône Valley, aiding their biodynamic conversion as well.
