K&L Notes

In 2000, Loic Mahe revived and replanted his first vineyard in Savennieres. Loving the primarily schist (shale) soils and how they express Chenin Blanc, Loic eventually cobbled together several other sites within the appellation and nearby Anjou. Certified organic and working biodynamically, he uses all native yeasts and low sulfur additions. The Sables & Schist is comprised of Chenin farmed from sables (wind blown sands) and schist. All fermentation and aging for this wine is done in fiberglass tanks, preserving the freshness while taming some of the vibrant acidity of the region. A superb introduction to this great producer. *Natural Wine*

One of the emerging stars of the Loire has to be Loic Mahe. This upstart wine producer is making serious nervy Chenin Blanc in one of the most nervy and upstart regions - Savennieres. The wines there are known for their laser beam focus and crackling acidity. Loic's wines have a richness underneath that frame what make these wines so engaging. No need to sit for a decade to find out if the wine will reveal itself though; Loic's wines have the fruit to show you what's happening now. But least we not forget that energy, these are wines that will age! The Sable and Schistes is from a combinations of vineyards (one sand and one schist) that deliver the whole of Savennieres. Lemon rind, Pippin apples, lanolin, Anjou pear and dusty minerals frame this electric wine with generous fruit. This is vibrant and fresh and I can't wait to drink some now, yet relish discovering a few more in my wine locker in a few more years.
