2018 Clos Cibonne Tibouren "Tradition" Côtes de Provence Rosé

SKU #1488387 95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Planted on the hills of the Maures mountains, the average age of these well-ventilated Tibouren vines is about 20 years, on free-draining, salty clay soils located close to the sea. These factors, along with sustainable viticultural practices, enable good vine health and a fresh style. Made predominantly from the much-prized Tibouren variety, this flagship wine also contains 10% Grenache, and after fermentation and blending, it spends 12-18 months in 100-year-old casks before being bottled. Elizabeth Gabay MW: Orange. Intense fruit – dried peach, apricot and orange – some nutty oak, red berries, creamy, long, fresh mineral acidity, and a phenolic finish. More gastronomic style. Joanna Simon: Deep, yellowy hue. Spicy, oaky, dried-flower and apricot aromas with a little mineral-kerosene development. Lovely, mineral, richly textured palate but tight too with dried apricot, mineral and crystallised orange peel flavours. Long, complex, mellifluous, fresh. Rod Smith: Mid-pale orange colour. Floral and herby, with the beginnings of cumin spice and scorched citrus peel aromas. Mouthfilling and deep. Rich fruit with jasmine and baked apple. Rounded and characteristic. Some touches of oak and lees. Very fresh, long finish. Classy. (Blind tasted by Elizabeth Gabay MW, Joanna Simon, Rod Smith MW) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

K&L Notes

The Clos Cibonne draws its name from Jean-Baptiste de Cibon, captain of Louis XVI's Royal navy and first owner of the vineyard. After his death in 1797, the property was sold to the Roux family's ancestors. In the 1930s, André Roux planted the vineyard to the Tibouren grape varietal. Since then, both children and grandchildren have carried on the tradition. Importer's Notes: "A blend of 90% Tibouren and 10% Grenache, fermented with native yeasts and aged sur lie in 100 year old foudre for at least 12 months before bottling. Salmon orange in color, the nose is compelling, aromatic and spicy, with a round yet vibrant palate and a surprisingly mineral finish. A perfect match for all things Provencal and beyond, try this versatile Rosé with grilled fish with olives and fennel over saffron rice."
