2018 Coriole "Dancing Fig" Rhône Blend McLaren Vale South Australia

SKU #1488366 94 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark Apart from the estate vineyards from the south to the north of McLaren Vale, Coriole also has a number of different species of fig trees that are carefully tended, the figs sold. The autosuggestion is too strong to ignore, and the bouquet of this mourvedre/grenache/shiraz blend has a ripe fig overtone. The palate keeps its focus where it should, with a suite of sultry earthy notes ex the mourvedre, lightened and brightened by the other varieties. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Outer quote mark This has a deliciously mellow feel with ripe dark berries and plums, laced with earthy, savory notes of wood, anise and iodine. The palate is bold and has some dark-fruit punch, amid the smooth, ripe-plum flavors. A blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvedre. Inner quote mark (5/2020)

With 45% Mourvedre, 40% Grenache, and 15% Shiraz, the Mourvedre really stands out from the blend in this wine. At its core, this is dark-fruited with meaty, savory flavors offset with moments of red strawberry, black cherry and cola notes and a spicy finish. Just the slightest bit of rosemary and dried herbs on the nose, is a wonderful complement to the fruit expression. There’s a ton of interplay going on here. Sweet fruited, but without being cloying or sugary, this sum result is extraordinarily well-balanced.

Rich, ripe, and crushable, but with a delicate edge that lends culture to the proceedings. Dried fruit and potpourri with a soft earth and maple finish all crowd the glass but find order on the palate, where they're chaperoned by soft tannin and nicely framed acids. If we ever can meet in groups again this'll make a great party wine, with a foot in so many camps, most drinkers can find the lane they love in the same bottle.

Dancing Fig indeed, the nose on this one is loaded with dark, dense purple and black fruit, not jammy by any means, just fresh and sweet smelling fig with a smidgen of chocolate and potpourri. The palate is heaven, not complicated by any means, just fresh fig and blueberries, a hint of chocolate and perfumed flower, and pure joy. This might be one of the more dangerous bottles of wine on the shelf because it will not last long at your house!
