2018 Coriole "Sparta" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia

SKU #1488363 92 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark Named after the original owners' Spartan origins, this is the only Coriole site facing due north. A vivid dark ruby, this is a richer expression and yet still relatively light on its feet. Floral and lifted upon entry. A dense undercurrent of blue to purple fruit allusions, liquorice, tapenade and Cherry Ripe notes, bound by a reductive tension and enhanced by subtle oak handling ride long. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A north-facing plot at Coriole, surrounded by olive trees, this has a rich attitude with deep, plum and boysenberry aromas and flavors, delivered amid long, plush and mellow tannins. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

Talk about a legendary value, the previous vintage of Coriole’s Sparta sold out nearly overnight. We’re thrilled to have this wine back in stock. Sourced from Coriole’s Galaxidia Vineyard, planted in 1998 on Terra Rossa soils. The depth of blackfruit on the nose here can’t be overstated. Rich, dark cassis, black plum with hints of graphite and a touch of charred cedar. Broad shouldered on the palate, there’s great acid balance, and is medium bodied leaning towards full. This is definitely Aussie Shiraz at its core, but dry, refined, and an absolute joy to drink. This is an exceptional value, delivering more at its price than any other Shiraz in the store.

That's not a Shiraz, THIS is a Shiraz. Not madness, this is Sparta. With a meaty finish longer than an Antipodel epic starring Kidman and Jackman, this is an A-List production. Dark fruit and baked herbs brood over a round, autumn spice mid-palate that fades to that round roast finish. Summer blockbuster.

Like opening a fresh bag of Australia brand licorice, the nose hits you with dried and confectioner strawberry, banana, dried plantain, and of course, licorice. The palate is even more interesting, with a savory entrance of oregano, roast beef, and pepper. The fruit comes back in with hints of stewed dark berries, fig, and a finish of fresh thyme. This is a fun one and frankly might be a little too dangerous if you're looking for a slow sipper!
