Weissburgunder is Pinot Bianco is Pinot Blanc — same grape, grown in the spectacular alpine setting of Alto Adige. From the importer: "The winery Gump (Gumphof) is nestled in the steep slopes at the entry of the Isarco Valley and its vineyards stretch from an altitude of 350 to 550 metres (1,150-1,800 feet) above sea level. The five hectare (ten acres) are planted with Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Schiava and Pinot Noir wines. At an age of 28, Markus Prackwieser started a quiet transformation and has produced his own wine since. His wines have been sought after both nationally and internationally, especially his outstanding Praesulis Selection wine range. The name Praesulis derives from the nearby Castle of Presule."

When I ask most Italian producers what their best wine is, where they make both Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco, they almost always say Pinot Bianco—it really produces spectacular, un-oaked wines. An excellent example, this 2018 Prackwieser shows elderflower and bergamot aromatics in a powerful and creamy complexity.

Pinot Blanc

- Also known as Pinot Bianco in Italy and Weissburgunder in Germany and Austria, Pinot Blanc is thought to be a mutation of Pinot Gris (which is said to be a lighter mutation of Pinot Noir). While the varietal's roots are Burgundian (it was frequently confused with Chardonnay throughout history) it is rare there these days, instead finding its best iterations in France's Alsace, Germany's Pfalz and Baden, Austria's Wachau and in Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli and Lombardy winegrowing regions. It produces full-bodied whites with relatively high acidity, yeasty citrus and appley aromas and flavors and hints of spice. Aged Pinot Blancs take on lovely honeyed tones.
