This expression, the 2017 Phos, shows pretty elegance and tightness that is further underscored by the naturally high tannins of the Aglianico grape. This wine opens a window onto the grape in its most naked state. This is a rare perspective on a variety that is often plied with extra oak and aging time. Instead, here you taste the natural bitterness of the skins with dark fruit flavors that are glossy and bright. This is an elegant and graceful wine. Some 4,500 bottles were made. In the shadow of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano, the 2017 I Cacciagalli “Phos” was something new for me. I am not usually a big fan of the tannins in Aglianico, but this wine is different. It’s made in amphorae, with wild yeasts, and a prolonged skin contact. The winemakers have tamed the powerful tannins (they are still there) while getting power and depth in a very drinkable Aglianico, which shows incredibly complex flavors without any wood aging. It really is intriguing.
