The 2018 Riesling Kabinett is refined, clear and flinty on the nicely reductive and slate-driven nose. Lush and round, with concentrated, ripe fruit and dense texture, this is a promising and persistent Riesling bottled with 8.5% alcohol plus about 45 grams of residual sugar. Tasted in July 2019.
I had an impressive and extensive tasting with Caroline Diel in July this year when I tasted wines from three vintages. Among the 40 or so wines, there was not a single one that was not at least excellent. Caroline's long-aged sparkling wines are some of Germany's finest fizz, as is the Pinot Noir Caroline and the Cuvée Victor that blends Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. Caroline joined her father, Armin, at the Schlossgut in 2006, but in 2017 she completely and legally took over, and she has even improved the Rieslings, which have become more precise, clear, fresh and mineral. Her Burgberg GG has become one of the Nahe's most exquisite site-specific, dry Rieslings, and it is released only two years after the harvest. In 2017, the Goldloch GG is not far apart, though. All of the grands crus are vinified in large oak (Stück and Doppelstück), whereas the Pinot wines are raised in Burgundian pièces. Last but not least, you can find world-class sweet Rieslings here. All in all, a giant step for Caroline Diel. Congratulations! (SR)

A delicious kabinett, elegant midpalate, with white raspberry and ruby grapefruit flavors that extend to envelop notes of dried pineapple and hints of eucalyptus on the finish. Needs a year or two to come together, but all the elements are there. Best from 2021 through 2033.

Mint-tinged honeydew melon and apple on the nose anticipate the cooling, luscious impression conveyed on a buoyant, polished palate. The sweetness here is entirely supportive. Stimulating apple seed piquancy, zest of lime and a nip of raw ginger add to the appeal of an energetically and refreshingly sustained finish. (DS)
