2017 Gour de Chaulé "Cuvée Tradition" Gigondas

SKU #1486984 94-95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Brilliant magenta. Potent, spice- and mineral-accented red fruits, succulent flowers and exotic spices on the highly perfumed, sharply delineated nose. Palate-caressing raspberry, bitter cherry, candied lavender and star anise flavors steadily deepen as the wine opens up. Manages to be both powerful and graceful, showing wonderful intensity and detail on a strikingly long, youthfully tannic finish. (JR) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark More structured than the fruit-driven 2016, the 2017 Gigondas Cuvee Tradition is still successful, boasting aromas of cranberries and citrus yet turning darker and richer on the palate. It's full-bodied and tannic, with crisp acids, but finishes on a silky note. Give it a few years in the cellar to round into form. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

K&L Notes

Established in 1900 in the heart of Gigondas, Gour de Chaule is now run by the founder's great-granddaughter, Stephanie Fumoso. This is a female-driven property as Stephanie's grandmother and mother were both actively involved in making the wines and establishing the property's domaine bottlings. The estate is comprised of 15 hectares planted in the surrounding region, 10 of which are within the appellation of Gigondas. Grenache is the main grape variety, making up about 80+% of the blend with Syrah and Mourvèdre making up the rest. Grapes are harvested manually and never destemmed. Elevage is in large oak foudres where the wine rests for about 18 months when it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The end result is a traditionally made and balanced wine that reflects some of the best that Gigondas has to offer.

A tremendous follow-up the the 2016, this new vintage of the Gour de Chaule is striking in its classic perfume of potpourri and spice. The 2017 vintage was a low yielding one, which contributes to the concentration but also a more classic one, giving this wine a more harmonious approach than its predecessor. Exotic garrigue notes, a palate full of black fruit and a finish with supple tannins, all lead to one of the best Gigondas' you will drink this year!
