2017 Fèlsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva

SKU #1485653 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Plenty of fruit concentration with cherry and strawberry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and lots of concentration. Intense and rich. Inner quote mark (5/2020)

95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is incredibly polished and sophisticated. Silky tannins give the 2017 its racy, sleek personality. Over the last year, the 2017 has really settled into a gorgeous place. There is plenty of vintage 2017 intensity, but Rancia is distinctly medium in body and restrained. The wilder side of Sangiovese, one of the signatures of Rancia and Fèlsina more broadly, tastes a bit baked out. I can't wait to see how the 2017 develops over the coming years and decades. (AG) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Rancia is always one of my favorite wines from this storied appellation (and the Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone). This vintage threw quite a few challenges at the winemaking team, but the Fèlsina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia emerges intact, intense and beautiful. It is virtually unscathed by the heat and drought that marked this growing season. In fact, that brilliant radiance, linearity and energy of the Sangiovese grape comes through loud and clear. The bouquet is redolent of red fruit, wild berry, toasted almond, violet and potting soil. (ML) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Fèlsina's flagship wine, Rancia is still brooding. Plum and tar show up on a backdrop of vanilla and exotic spice. Though fruit is supple, layers of assertive tannins need time to loosen their grip. Appetizingly savoury, this finishes with an intense, irony character. (MM) Inner quote mark (6/2020)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Cherry, plum, juniper, earth and chocolate flavors highlight this sleek, intense red. There is depth and length here, along with a solid structure, yet this will require time to unravel and reveal all its facets. (BS) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Balsamic aromas of camphor mingle with new leather, scorched earth, pressed blue flower and oak-driven spice. The firm, elegantly structured palate features dried black cherry, licorice and tobacco before a coffee bean close. (KO) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

The Felsina Chianti's are such great values and hard to pass them up especially when you have such complexity at an obtainable price. This Rancia is a great candidate for someone that is starting to set aside wines on a minimum budget. Dried rose petals, dried blueberry-cranberry, rosemary oil. This is a stunner of a wine and will keep for years to come. But if you feel the need to indulge now give a try with lamb tagine and dried cherries over saffron rice pilaf, I think you would be delighted with this paring.

A few words came to mind after tasting this stunning wine; value, complexity, balance, ageability. A seductive nose bursting with cherries and violets along with a velvety tannic structure secures this Chianti's place among it's Felsina brethren. This Tuscan masterpiece will bring joy to you and yours in the near-term as well as the long-term. Excited to see how this matures over time. Definite cellar candidate!

This boasts a deep ruby/purple color, lots of black cherries, raspberries, and currants with hints of spice, Tuscan dust, and minerals. There is a great texture on this full-bodied wine. It has a long, authoritative finish that combines power with elegance. I would drink this over the next couple of years.

Intensely aromatic and packed with dark fruit: black plum, black cherry, wild forest berries. Rich and tightly structured, it's a powerful wine that will age beautifully if you decide to lay it down. I love its depth and layered palate with many flavors unveiling when it's decanted for a couple of hours. Very complex and intriguing wine.

This has been my favorite wine from Fèlsina since I first tasted it decades ago. It always has such definition, depth, and incredible length, the hallmarks of quality wine. The 2017 vintage has more nerve and a more vibrant center then some of the more powerful vintages. I suggest you decant this for a couple of hours ahead of time—you’ll be well rewarded. It is truly a sensory experience.
