2016 Black Kite "Kite's Rest Vineyard" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1485360 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Good balance and a plethora of juicy, ripe fruit flavors highlight this full-bodied wine. It has generous black cherry and light baking-spice aromas, plenty of cherry and sour cherry in the flavors and a moderately tannic texture livened by good acidity. (JG) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Vivid garnet. Intense red fruit, floral and succulent floral aromas show sharp definition and suave vanilla and incense overtones. Smoothly blends depth and liveliness on the palate, offering juicy raspberry, cherry and candied rose qualities that become spicier as the wine stretches out. Finishes impressively long and gently chewy, with sneaky tannins and a touch of cola. (JR) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

91 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark As a group, the Black Kite Pinot Noirs key on fruity richness, and this one does just that while showing excellent structure and a very careful complement of sympathetic oak. It is a fairly big wine with a fine fleshy feel and integral tannins, but it never defers to simple ripeness, and its long-lasting, well-focused flavors offer tantalizing glimpses of further layering and complexity to come. Enjoyable now for its fruity concentration, it will only get better with time and is sure to repay upwards of a half-dozen years of additional cellaring. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark A different beast coming from the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, the 2016 Pinot Noir Kite’s Rest offers more red and blue fruits as well as notes of candied violets, bay leaf, underbrush, and incense. Supple, nicely textured, with terrific purity of fruit, and nicely integrated acidity, it’s another terrific wine from this estate. Inner quote mark (1/2019)

OK, granted we've had some pretty epic Pinot Noir offers in the past few months but this deal is just ridiculous! We worked direct with the winery here to secure a parcel of this single vineyard, flagship wine at a massive discount! Black Kite Cellars are known for small lots of Pinot Noir from some of the state's best Pinot Noir vineyards. This bottling comes from their own home block, Kite's Rest Vineyard, surround by Coastal Redwoods, in the cool, northwestern end of Anderson Valley. This wine combines three clones of Pinot Noir from three distinct single blocks into a deep, complex and layered wine. It leads with powerful aromas of liquored cherry and black raspberry melded with toasted woodsy spices and bramble leaf. Quite full bodied and intense with a rich texture and lots of ripe berry flavors, sassafras and subtle vanilla. The weight and length on the palate is underscored by complex notes of warm earth and dry leaf litter. Big, powerful, Pinot Noir for sure but still plenty of Anderson Valley character woven throughout the generous fruit core. Our price is less than half of the wine's original retail price! That combined with the big scores mean this will probably move fast. Fans of Kosta Browne, Rochioli, Paul Hobbs, Martinelli etc, should check this out ASAP.

Rooty tooty, flesh and booty. This voluptuous style of Pinot Noir is more common from Sonoma and usually not what I gravitate to, but this bottle is really successful. In fact, I'm all over it. This is made from some ripe and healthy grapes that retain a quality of crunchy red fruit that you'd have a hard time finding from other regions. Anderson Valley terroir is also present here with the suggestion of coastal forest floor and layered spice that can't be entirely attributed to oak. Pristine clarity and fine, polished tannins too. This has the quality and expression to evolve, but it drinks so well now that you might not want to sacrifice that beautiful fruit. Try one and decide for yourself. These grapes are worth a lot more than $25 either way. Va va va voom.
