2016 Família Nin-Ortiz "Planetes de Nin" Priorat

SKU #1484784 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A 60/40 blend of Garnacha and Cariñena from the vineyard that names the wine, the 2016 Planetes de Nin saw a similar vinification and aging as the 2017 I tasted next to it, so the differences found were only due to the vintage and the moment of harvest. This is a fresher vintage, with tantalizing aromas that are subtle and elegant, with notes of violets and red cherries, nuanced and ever-changing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely textured, with very fine tannins and fine chalky minerality. 9,108 bottles were filled in April 2017. (LG) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

K&L Notes

Based in Porrera, Nin Ortiz is seen by many as possibly the most exciting of Priorat's third wave, nipping on the heals of pioneers such as Clos Mogador, Mas Martinet, Alvaro Palacios and Clos Erasmus. In fact, Ester Nin still manages the vineyards at Clos Erasmus. She and her partner Carles Ortiz employ biodynamic practices in their vineyards, all located in Porrera. They are of the school of thought that favors a blend of Garnacha and Cariñena, without any foreign grape varieties included in the blend. Ester and Carles' humble, tiny production winery is seen by those in the know as ascendant, and in a relatively quick clip of time it has reached the top echeleon, earning a spot amongst the top five producers in the zone.

At its best, new wave Priorat is as good as the old guard, but with a renewed focus on vibrancy and freshness that counter balances the natural richness in the area. This is one of the most exciting bottles I've had in a long time, with an obvious balance that is only matched by the youthful grip that promises a long, fine ageing period. Drinking it now though - with a lot of air - the rocky, savory tones relax, and allow the cherry fruit notes to rise up and out of the glass, along with the fresher herbal tones that come out from under the more dried tones that show earlier. Serious Spain.
