Tangerine oil, almond, dried flowers and mint impart a strong savory character, but what stands out most about the 2017 is sheer vinous intensity. Readers will find a rich, beautifully textured sparkling wine that truly comes alive at the dinner table. Not to mention that the Cruse Tradition is one of the most compelling sparkling wines being made in California. I suggest opening the 2017 a few hours in advance, as air does wonders for the wine. The 2017 is 54% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay, with 6% perpetual reserve, taken from some of the top sites in California: 32% Alder Springs, 30% Rorick, 24% Keefer, 13% Heintz and 2% Rita’s Crown. Primary and secondary fermentations were both indigenous. The wine was aged in a combination of barriques and stainless steel, with no S02, and bottled with zero dosage. Outer quote mark Michael Cruse is still tinkering with the style of Tradition, his non-vintage sparkler. This sees no sulfur during elevage, and the combination of lees and mild oxidation results in a wine of unusual and dramatic savor. Salty, nutty, bready, with a lees character so pronounced it brings sherry to mind, the wine nevertheless has a tremendous tension to the its structure, a lemon curd brightness over the breadth from the lees yielding an umami character in the extreme. Golden, honeyed nose of toasted hazelnuts, pastry cream, and fresh pears. Gentle, soft mousse with a palate of white flowers, beeswax, and citrus. Long, pastry finish. This wine is 54% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay with 94% from the 2017 vintage and the remainder from our perpetual reserve. The vineyards used are Alder Springs, Rorick Vineyard, Keefer Ranch, and a small amount of fruit from Charlie Heintz. It is a brut zero sparkler with only a small amount of sulfur added at disgorging.

Those of you lucky few who have had Ultramarine sparkling wines are sure to enjoy this release. It has a lively, fresh and clean nose of lemon/lime with a hint of sea salt. It is also clean on the palate, like a zero dosage bottling should be. It is alive with lemons, oranges, Granny Smith apples and a beautiful hint of apricot. Stunning and delicious!

One of the most complex Domestic Sparklers I've tried lately and one of the most compelling. This is chock full of flavors and aromas of green apple, tangerine zest, ginger and citrus. The pinpoint mousse on the zesty body even has hints of green melon and kiwi. The clean and chalky finish seem to go on and on. Gorgeous stuff!
