2017 Catena Zapata "Catena Alta" Chardonnay Mendoza (Elsewhere $29) (Previously $28)

SKU #1484018 92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark I love the pear, licorice and vanilla aromas. Clarity and elegance. The finish lingers long and gently pulls you back for more. Inner quote mark (4/2018)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bright yellow-green. Precise aromas of white peach, citrus fruits and flowers. Rich, suave and smooth, offering noteworthy purity and breadth to its white fruit and mineral flavors. Plusher and rounder than the 2016 but maintains a light touch and finishes with excellent subtle persistence. This is easier to taste today than the 2016. (ST) Inner quote mark (7/2019)

K&L Notes

94 points Tim Atkin: "If you can’t afford the two top Catena Chardonnays, this cheaper cuvée from Gualtallary and Villa Bastías isn’t far behind it in terms of quality. Subtle, elegant and showing a hint of tropical fruit from botrytis, it finishes fresh, taut and spicy"

Once again South America delivers in the Chard department, though I shouldn't be surprised, Catena is a staple producer for a reason! The nose has the white chalk note that's hard to find outside of that French region that's rather famous for chardonnay. Pear and ripe green apple intermingle with notes of dough and toast that almost remind me of fresh baked pie. The palate is sublime. Bright and balanced with pear and apple up front, baking spice coming in with that pie crust note on the end. And I mean pie crust! Doughy and salty with a hint of baking spice. This is killer and for $25 it's a no brainer of a buy!
