2018 Domaine Marc Colin St-Aubin 1er Cru "La Chatenière" (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1483491 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chatenière is showing especially well, exhibiting aromas of citrus oil, crisp green apple, white flowers and crushed chalk. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, racy and incisive, with good depth and tension, concluding with a mineral finish. Damien Colin continues his progression towards longer élevage in larger vessels: In 2017, he purchased more 300- and 350-liter barrels, a trend that continued in 2018, and after a year in wood, his wines now see a protracted sojourn in tank on the lees. He's adding less sulfur dioxide at harvest, finding that fermentations last longer. And longer élevage with attendant natural clarification meant that he was able to bottle his 2017s entirely without fining or filtration. Those 2017s, revisited from bottle, confirmed their fine showing last year; and 2018, rounder and more immediate in style, looks to be another success for Domaine Marc Colin, as my notes testify. Outer quote mark The 2018 Saint-Aubin La Chatenière 1er Cru comes from vines located on a west-facing slope with a little more clay mixed in with the limestone soils. It has a lovely bouquet of honeydew melon, grapefruit, orange pith and crushed stone, very well defined and focused. The palate is taut and fresh on the entry, featuring apricot and mango notes. The tropical notes are a little more heightened here vis-à-vis Colin’s other cuvées, due to the more clayey element in the soils, but the gorgeous, spicy finish leaves the tongue tingling long after the wine has departed. Superb. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Outer quote mark There is a touch of gunflint character to the cool essence of citrus-inflected white orchard fruit scents. The delicious and overtly stony medium weight flavors also flash a lovely sense of underlying tension on the sneaky long finish that would benefit from having a bit more depth on the ever-so-mildly warm finale. K&L Notes

91-93 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Made from old vines in the upper part of the vineyard. Mid lemon colour with some weight of fruit on the nose. Chiselled white fruit on the attack with some flesh behind, but the aromatics stay much more in the classic range without over-ripeness. The most representative of all with additional weight."
