If you happen to be looking for a great example of what Clare Valley wines taste like, this one hits the nail on the head. Honestly, if you're looking dark, concentrated and delicious Cab that punches well above it's price point, same answer. I have a love affair with wines from the Clare Valley. Altitude from the northern reaches of the Mount Lofty Ranges along with a cooler, maritime climate produce wines that starkly contrast what you find in the rest of Australia. Think of it this way--is there any where else on earth that Riesling and Syrah are grown successfully, side by side? That tells you a lot. The cool climate here gives the wines depth, darkness and concentration. The Calcannia Cabernet skews towards dark fruit, black cassis, black raspberry, plum and black cherry with the fruit set nicely against a medium acid profile. The tannins here take center stage, forward, but not so bitter or astringent as to need excessive aging. Charismatic and yet bold, I thought this was a great example of one of my favorite wine regions.
