Outer quote mark This estate makes a brilliant white, and the 2018 Falaise Blanc is no exception. Based on Chardonnay, Marsanne, Petite Manseng, and Sauvignon Gris, its lighter gold hue is followed by a fresh yet also textured white that offers up lots of pineapple and white currant fruits as well as notes of toasted bread, crushed rock, spice, and a touch of flowers. Outer quote mark Predominantly Marsanne and Chardonnay, which makes it ineligible for the Languedoc appellation, the 2018 IGP Pays d'Oc la Falaise Blanche received three days of skin contact before being pressed to barrel for fermentation and aging. Subtle notes of toasted marshmallow and grilled white peaches appear on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is silky textured, finishing with plenty of length. K&L Notes

The Falaise was originally a take on a Rhône-styled white blend but it has become so much more. This year it is a blend of Chardonnay with Marsanne and a small percentage of Petit Manseng and Sauvignon Gris. The wine is partially aged in Stockinger barrels "the work of a famous Austrian cooper" to give a subtle creaminess and sweet spice to the finished product. While it tends toward a fuller body, with lots of texture and richness on the palate, the wine is nicely balanced with crisp acidity. Beautiful clotted cream, papaya and honeysuckle notes mingle with the classic aromas of marzipan and ripe apple. On the palate the wine is all about the texture, seemingly endless.

The first word in my note for this wine is "yum." It has tons of texture, luminous acid, and a long, long finish, showcasing delicious stone fruit notes throughout. It's a blend of Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Gris, Chardonnay, and Marsanne. The effect is a wine that's voluptuous but light on its feet, and would be great with a roasted chicken.

This fragrant, lusty white wine from La Clape tore cartwheels through the cobwebbed corridors of Living in Covid Time, upending any dormant sputtering spiders of doubt and ennui. A liquid draught of sunlight, bees in flight and vines pendent with fruit, revealing a tapestry of aromas- lychees, marzipan, fig paste with a challenging mineral note- an homage to the life of the Mediterranean region and men and women who made it. Drink this wine with rich soft cheeses or savor it with an almond-crusted pork tenderloin.

Negly is famous for their world-class reds but sometimes, the whites don't get as much attention as they deserve. Based in La Clape, the Falaise Blanc is declassified as its blend doesn't quite fit the appellation mold. And it's all the better for it. This blend of Chardonnay, Marsanne with a splash of Sauvignon Gris and Petit Manseng has body for days but wonderful underlying acidity. A Rhone styled-white with Burgundian sensibilities, it is filled with aromas and flavors of white flowers, candied nectarine and wet stones. It has a beautiful lift to it, supporting the body underneath. An absolute steal for the quality, which is what Negly has always done. This is not just a "red" house anymore.
