2018 Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1481379 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark From vines in the Quartier des Marei, Lachaux's 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing brilliantly, offering up aromas of dark berries and plums complemented by nuances of orange rind, rose petals, dark chocolate and incense. Medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, this is a concentrated but weightless Clos Vougeot of considerable dimension and structural finesse. This vintage represents another decisive qualitative leap for this cuvée. As I wrote last year, the thoughtful, intelligent and increasingly self-assured Charles Lachaux seems to gain in authority each time I taste with him, and my most recent visit prompted the same reflection. As readers will know by now, in the cuverie, wines that were once heavily extracted and lavishly oaked are now gently macerated, with significant percentages of whole clusters, and matured in mostly used barrels. In the vineyard, the evolution has been just as dramatic. The vines' canopies are now rolled, emulating the practice of Domaine Leroy, and a new parcel in Aux Reignots has been planted at a density of fully 20,000 vines per hectare. That's hugely labor-intensive, yet it appears to be paying off, as Lachaux is able to achieve a concentration in the vineyard that permits the most gentle of extraction in the cuverie. Outer quote mark The expressive nose is unusually elegant with it airy aromas of essence of red currant, cherry and soft spice and earth elements. There is once again very good volume to the sleekly textured and intense larger-scaled flavors that exhibit very fine power on the impressively long finale. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

92-94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very mineral-driven bouquet, crushed rock aromas percolating through the raspberry and wild strawberry fruit and hints of wet limestone developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening and a fine bead of acidity. Quite bright in style, with superb tension on the finish. Very fine, although I hope it develops more substance over its second winter. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Outer quote mark The domaine's holding, at the top of the slope, has now been identified with its lieu-dit name on the label. There are robust cherry aromas and the forthright fruit dominates any oak presence. Velvety for this grand cru, it's concentrated and fleshy, with firm ripe tannins and piquant acidity. At present it's not harmonious but all the components seem in place. Spicy and zesty, this has fine potential. Drinking Window 2023 - 2038. (SB) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

K&L Notes

94-97pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "From the Quartier de Marais Haut. Fresh glowing mid purple. A very elegant bouquet for Clos Vougeot. Excellent weight of fruit through the middle, absolutely covers the tannins, the light touch has worked even in this vineyard. Exceptionally long finish."
