Xavier Vignon was always a scientist at heart and began his studies in pharmacology in Reims in the Champagne region. A chance encounter with an oenologist ignited his passion for wine and set him on a new path where he quickly changed his focus to winemaking. Studying winemaking in Champagne and abroad gave him a different outlook in wine production and he brought that perspective back to Montpellier in southern France where he finished his oenology degree. Accumulating years of wine experience, his career as a consulting winemaker really started in 1996. Focusing on top estates and growers in the Rhone Valley, he has created a catalog of contacts that he calls on to get some of the best fruit (that he helps grow) and makes some of the most exciting wines in the region. Cuvée Anonyme is Xavier's signature wine and one of his first individually made wines. From old, old-vines that are traditionally co-planted, this has 100+ year old Grenache, Vaccarese, Counoise, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Terret Noir and Muscardin.

Upon finally tasting the "Cuvée Anonyme" I understand the critics' high praise! The nose has intoxicating aromas of chocolate raspberry, blueberries, cherry kirsch , garrigue and gravelly minerals. The texture is plush and luxurious, balanced harmoniously by a great acid line under all the richness. The finish is so long. This is pretty unbelievable wine for under $50!

Aromas and flavors of seaweed, earth, Asian spices, and copious bright red fruits combine beautifully is this approachable beauty. Although deeply fruited, the wine is not at all heavy, and the tannins peaking through the finish work beautifully. Great quality for this vintage.

I have always found Xavier Vignon's wines thrilling, from the first time I tried them. Plush and fruit filled, they have an air of modernity, but there is exceptional balance underneath. Ominous flavors of liqueur-like concentration never overwhelm the senses. Instead, there is an almost flawless layering of aromas and flavors emanating from the wines. Each successive vintage of the Cuvée Anonyme has impressed since I first tasted a 2007 so many years ago. Here we are on the 2017, and I just tried it with the 2016 and 2010 in a mini-vertical. What an experience! Each wine was reflective of its vintage, but all possessed impeccable balance. The 2010 is just entering its next stage of development and is in full blossom. The 2016 has that powerful concentration and evocative mouthfeel. The 2017 is sumptuous, brimming with plum and black cherry flavors with wisps of violets and cardamom scenting the glass. With its seamless finish, this is a gorgeous wine indeed. Where to begin? Drink your 2010, forget about your 2016 for a while, and think longingly of the engaging 2017. You won't regret putting a few of each in your collection.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
