1996 Huntly Burnside (Balvenie) 21 Year Old "Duncan Taylor" Single Sherry Octave Finish Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1480376 Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Lush, soft summer fruits bathe the nose with green melon, kiwi, green apple, tart gooseberry, ladyfingers, and a not unpleasant plastic note, like toy building blocks or the glove compartment of a new car. Baked orange delivers sharp tart flavors, with allspice, barley sugar, and hard candies, later developing apple notes and settling into a creamy, fruity finish. (JM, Spring 2019) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

The wonderful historic bottler Duncan Taylor has been on the right side of so many incredible bottlings thanks to some smart moves by its owner Euan Shand. One place where Euan has been able to stay ahead of the curve is the in purchase of high quality teaspooned malt. These are whiskies distilled at blue chip distillers that are effectively declassified to prevent blenders and bottlers from profiting on the good names of those distillers. Fortunately for us, those agreements do nothing to prevent us from illustrating clearly the source of these casks. This is a single barrel numbered with distillation date, which tells us that this was blended with a microscopic amount (if at all) the birth of this spirit. Needless to say in the current climate of tariffs and raising prices on single malts, finding a gem like this is an incredible treat. The Balvenie Distillery doesn't sell any single malt to other bottlers or blenders, but if you were to find a similarly aged single cask bottled by the distillery you'd expect to pay upwards of $500 at least. Considering how rare and limited the distilleries own cask offerings it's astonishing that they'd ever send any of the revered spirit to outside parties, but the Scotch industry relies on this system bulk trades and filling contracts and we're very grateful they do. We know it's Balvenie because "Burnside" is the trade name used by William Grant to denoted teaspooned malt from this special distillery.
