K&L Notes

There is a very short list for “old school” producers in Rioja and Bodegas Riojanas is on the top of that list. Founded in 1890 it has been controlled by the same family for 90 years. The bodega is located in the village of Cenicero where they have large land holdings. Cenicero is located in the heart of Rioja Alta just across the Ebro from Rioja Alavesa. Their two famous bottles are Vina Albina and the Monte Real, which they make in both Reserva and Gran Reserva styles. The Monte Real wines are always a richer, more open and expressive style. Great for tonight, these wines age wonderfully, you can still find bottlings from the 60’s and earlier still.

This is a Rioja that will brighten any occasion. The is an ease, a forwardness, that is so easy to like that it immediately puts your guard down. This wine is a charmer. Unmistakably Rioja with its dark red fruits, earth and oak spice but that classic Rioja spiciness is not the first thing that you notice, it is the fruit. It is not primary youthful fruit, it is matured, but not so much that it has forgotten to have fun. That dark cherry and berry fruit fill the palate with a mix of spice, earth and herbs all backing the fruit. The wine is rounded, more Rhone like than Bordeaux. This is a dinner wine that wants to be opened and drunk before dinner ever starts. The tannins are present, giving the wine shape but again they are easy going. This is a generous Reserva more intent with having fun than impressing. The kind of wine that you(I) want to have around the house.

Rich and round with incredible depth, this is classic Reserva Rioja. The time-cost for producers to release Rioja at these ages isn't talked about enough, and the returns on that investment are only felt by the consumer it seems. This bottle can meet almost meat forward meal on its level with character and class. Ripe red fruit, with a layered dark stone edge and dusty finish. Complex enough to think about, but too easy to enjoy.
