2019 Bodega Chacra "Cincuenta y Cinco" Pinot Noir Rio Negro Patagonia

SKU #1477957 98 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark The blue-fruit character is impressive with intense, violet and floral character, which turns redder with earthier notes. Full-bodied, tight and very chewy, yet the tannins spread across the palate, releasing pure, seductive fruit and tense, bright acidity. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

K&L Notes

Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia founder Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, ended up in Patagonia after tasting a bottle of Pinot Noir he fell in love with, and was told came from old vines in Patagonia. This wine comes from 60 year-old, head pruned vines in the Rio Negro Valley of Patagonia. Fermented in very small enamel lined tanks, and then transferred to French oak barrels (20% new), this is a beautiful, bright and nuanced expression of Pinot Noir, with succulent fruit and elegant texture. An eye opener for the potential of Pinot Noir in northern Patagonia. *Organic, Biodynamic*

This is great wine. Full stop. It is arresting. The nose is intoxicating. Fruit, berries, flowers, spices, exotic woods, earth and stones I have to be general because trying to capture this nose with words is futile. That is what a great wine should be like. I loved this wine before I could take a full sniff, minutes later I'm still smelling it not even tempted to take a sip. Only the best Pinots can do that. There is an intensity to this wine the speaks to its Argentine roots. You can see it in the color of the wine, there is a saturated vibrancy here it is deep and pure, just like that flavors of the wine. It is built like Burgundy. There is a sneaky weight and tannins and focusing acidity. The fruit is all New world the structure is old world. With decanting, any of the edges that shows upon opening disappears. The fruit fleshes out, but the wine never loses its focus or drive. The mixed fruit play out long on the palate with real subtle oak and a distinctive Patagonian stony earth note. Again, this wine is great. It should age gracefully for a long time but with how good it tastes now only people who have off site storage might have the chance to try it with age.

Elite. I've claimed more than once this is my favorite producer in South America, and I see absolutely nothing to change that opinion based off this stellar edition of their "Cincuenta Y Cinco." This bottle has become a benchmark for Pinots anywhere near this price point in my book and this vintage is a showstopper, with the classic, dark, desiccated cherry notes bundled up with ceder and sweet twig tones that are embellished by a touch of oak. The firm tannic profile rounds the palate, pairing with obvious, high-elevation induced acidity to provide framing. Marrying Old World finesse with New World power, this is the crème de la crème.
