2017 Domaine de Verquière Rasteau

SKU #1477763 92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This is a glossy, succulent blend of Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%) assembled from two distinct terroirs in Rasteau. Mulberry and cassis flavors are concentrated and plush but edged by hints of earth, garrigue and cacao powder. An elegant but hedonistic sip to enjoy now-2030. (AI) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

Outer quote mark An assemblage of two different terroirs: yellow marls overlaid with large pebbles at higher altitude, and clay-limestone on the plain. The fruit is all hand-harvested, destemmed then fermented with gentle extraction. The wine is aged in large oak foudres for four months before bottling. It's deep and juicy, with appealing plum and blueberry fruits. There's more blackberry on the palate, along with dense tannins. It's very well balanced and well structured, with good length. A good value pick among the 2017 Rasteaus. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark Aged in foudres, the 2017 Rasteau is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. It's a pretty classic example of the appellation, with hints of chocolate drizzled over spiced cherries. Full-bodied and creamy-ripe, it somehow remains lively and mouthwatering on the finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Rasteau is another high-quality wine in the making. Offering classic notes of scorched earth, dark fruits, licorice, and obvious minerality, it’s medium-bodied, has impressive depth of fruit, and a clean, enjoyable finish. It shows the fruit-forward style of the vintage as well as the classic signature of the appellation. Inner quote mark (9/2018)

K&L Notes

Thibaut Chamfort has taken the helm at this wonderful multi-generational estate property situated in the village of Sablet. Making wines from a variety of terroirs, including Rasteau, Plan de Dieu, Vacqueyras, and of course Sablet, he uses organic practices and minimal intervention in his winemaking practices. Concrete tanks are used for fermentation and mix of tank and large foudre for elevage. Thibaut is making pure and decisive wines from the variety of his holdings. The Rasteau comes from the higher plots in Rasteau over mix of marls and large pebbles (similar to the pebbles of Chateauneuf). The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah.

If you're a fan of the Domaine's Côtes du Rhone, the Rasteau will knock your socks off. The flavor and structure bars are raised here, with a complex palate that brims with blackberries, dried figs and licorice, gentle tannins and a nose that shows savory herbs, roasted plums and salty Moroccan olives. I love the comforting hint of spice on the palate and the finish that lingers long after I've emptied the bottle. An impressive wine.

The Verquiere Rasteau takes a definitive step up from our regular everyday favorite, the Verquiere Cotes-du-Rhone. Their Rasteau comes from the higher plateaus seated above the regular Rhone plantings and this exposure gives the region greater overall potential in producing even more serious wines. Rasteau, a recently elevated Cru region, has more akin to Chateauneuf having copious amounts of galets (rolled stones) in the vineyards with their radiating heat which add depth and warmth to the fruit. These stones help give the Rasteau bottling a warm raspberry fruited tone that is accompanied by a lush mouthfeel. The wine keeps its focus though with its perfume of dried flowers and mixed baking spices. It never come off as too heavy. A long savory finish later and your mind might drift even closer towards Chateauneuf, but you're firmly seated in Rasteau with a worthy bottle for half that price. An outstanding value!
