2017 Clos de los Siete Red Blend Valle de Uco

SKU #1477410 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A very refined, creamy wine, showing blackberries and blueberries with chocolate and light hazelnut notes. Medium to full body. The fine tannins are polished and creamy and the beautiful, reserved finish goes on for a really long time. Wow! Best ever, because of its length and beauty. One for the palate or the cellar. Outer quote mark Clos de los Siete makes wines from Vista Flores, Uco Valley, with support from Michel Rolland’s group of wineries. A blend of 52% Malbec, 15% Syrah, 21% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, 70% aged for 12 months in oak, this is a dense reddish-purple in the glass. The nose presents notes of licorice and plum jam plus vanilla and hints of balsam and black olives. Intense in the mouth, with fine-grained tannins and a compressed, concentrated style. K&L Notes

Clos de los Siete is a Bordeaux-inspired project in Argentina that is blended by Michel Rolland. He first visited Mendoza in the late 1980s and was immediately impressed by the potential that he saw there. After years of looking he and a group of friends—there were seven of them—hence the name, found the right site in the Vista subzone of the Uco Valley. Why? The high, 1000m elevation with its cool nights and ample sunshine in combination with the deep stony, gravelly soils that have just the right amount of clay are perfect for Bordeaux varietals. This is Argentina, so Malbec takes the lead in the blend with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and a splash of Syrah for good measure. Viticulture and vinification occur as they would in a great Bordeaux house, with a little less new oak. This has been one of the best buys from around the world for almost 20 years.

This has to be the best Bordeaux blend in the store. It is rich, almost full bodied and very inviting. The nose is polished and restrained Argentina; bright fruits and berries, subtle creamy sweet oak spice and a gentle floral lift. The palate feels way more expensive than $15! The delicious Malbec fruit is backed by the structure from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, all you need is a little to feel the soft but present tannins. The mid-palate benefits from the Syrah and the Merlot and it is framed with the subtle use of oak. You can taste and feel Michel Rolland touch with this wine, and you can purchase a case of this for what one of his other bottlings might cost and have way more fun drinking it!

What isn't there to love about a $15 red blend? On that merit alone this is a no brainer, the big bonus is how delicious this is! The nose is all about berry and floral notes! Blackberry, blueberry, cassis and potpourri just out with a backbone of creamy oak. Underneath that are notes of hazelnut and baking spice. The palate is rich, round, and full of those berry notes with an underpinning of wet tea and plum skin. This has no right to be this delicious and I'm thrilled we have it to share with the world!

Better than pretty much anything we've ever sold in its price range and style. Rich, straddling the line between medium and full bodied. Solidly framed by tannins that belong in more expensive wine. There's almost no vegetal edge that you find in most South American Blends, which could be attributed to the nice Syrah inclusion that wraps the savory edges towards a meatier, gamey note. Pretty darn Good.
