SKU #1476755 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Caravina is going to need at least a few years to fully come together. Aromatically expressive and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2014 delivers superb quality and pedigree for the money. Smoke, cedar, tobacco, graphite, tar, licorice and dried herbs add the closing shades of nuance. Caravina remains one of the very best values in Napa Valley Cabernet. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2016)

K&L Notes

"Seavey is one of the great, unheralded, under-the-radar terroirs in all of Napa Valley...Bill and Mary were visionaries with regard to what could be achieved on these dry-farmed hillside vineyards tucked away in Conn Valley, east of the Meadowood Resort." - Robert Parker, Jr. Winery notes: "Seavey’s 16th vintage of estate-produced Caravina Cabernet, the 2014, was made from grapes sourced from a unique tapestry of steep hillside blocks in the vineyard notable for their intense and youthful flavors. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak barrels (40% new) for 19 months before bottling in June 2016. 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot. 2,200 cases produced."

What a delightful and surprising bottle this turned out to be. Though not a total outlier among Napa Cabernet, it definitely carves out its own niche. Lively and honest, its tannins have begun to smooth out, but it retains its vibrant, youthful feel. Black and boysenberry puree combine beautifully with the firm tannin and superbly integrated oak to create a wonderful, expressive wine. I cannot wait to see how this continues to develop as it ages, and I look forward to future vintages.

I've been putting more thought into my dinner planning as of late and the wine I choose to drink must match the effort I'm putting into my cooking. The Seavey "Caravina" is just that wine. Such gorgeous ripe fruit, a touch of graphite, elegant structure, superb balance and complexity. This kept evolving in my glass, my nose lingering longer in the glass before each sip. And if that wasn't enough, it's worth more than what we are offering it for at this special pricing. Score! Don't wait. This a prime wine for that prime ribeye steak that this was made for.

I've been cooking a lot of steak these past couple of weeks, and when you have streak, you gotta have either a damn good syrah or a damn good cab. This is one of the finest expressions of Napa Cabernet for 50 bucks. Elegantly structured and balanced, you can easily mix this up in a blind tasting with some left bank Bordeaux. Cedar, tobacco, and dried herbs run smoothly along the palate, and is balanced by well tuned tannins. This is a damn good value, and truly Napa Cabernet at it's finest. You will not be disappointed.

This micro-small family winery has been quietly making gorgeous mountain-grown "estate" Cabernet Sauvignon for a small but adoring league of fans for 30+ years. This historic property was purchased in 1979 and replanted by Bill and Mary Seavey. Together they carved out a gorgeous little "wine oasis" up the mountainside above the Silverado Trail, just north of Pritchard Hill. The "Caravina" bottling, with its supple tannins and youthful intensity, represents an expression that is more forward in its youth than their more muscular flagship Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim Duane leads the winemaking team having joined Seavey in 2011 after stints at Robert Mondavi Winery and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. He works in tandem with super-consultant Philippe Melka. These guys "get" Cabernet Sauvignon. For a limited time only, we're able to make you a very special offer on this classic Napa Valley beauty.
