2016 Avennia "Sestina" Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $70)

SKU #1476638 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2016 Sestina checks in as 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that saw 21 months in 48% new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. It shows the purity and elegance of the vintage beautifully and offers classic Cabernet notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil, crushed rocks, and tobacco leaf. With beautiful balance and that more elegant, finesse-driven style of the estate ... Winemaker Chris Peterson continues to fashion some of the most impressive wines in the State. These are always more classical in style and show plenty of acidity and structure in their youth, yet they blossom with just short term cellaring and are brilliant wines. 95+ Inner quote mark (4/2019)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Impressive blue flowers on the nose with a wealth of fresh, ripe berries and an alluringly subtle thread of spices. The palate has a neatly contained, central drive of fresh flavor, swathed in silky, long and fine tannins. Impressive. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (7/2019)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Sestina has a focused nose with a robust, still-tight fruit core, subtle oak tones and soft floral aromas. Full-bodied in the mouth, the wine shows a classic expression of Cabernet with focused minerality, blackberry, plum and sage as it evolves on the palate. The wine lingers long with elegance and finesse on the finish, showing great precision that will last a decade and more. Just 410 cases were produced. (AM) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bright dark red. Alluring violet and rose petal lift to the aromas of dark berries, licorice and black olive. Penetrating, savory wine with terrific saline minerality and lift to its wild berry and licorice flavors. This very concentrated, backward wine finishes with serious tannins but no rough edges. A bit more sharply focused than its 2015 sibling but this wine will need longer for its tannic spine to unclench. Includes a good percentage of vines from the 1970s; aged in about 45% new oak. 93+ (ST) Inner quote mark (7/2018)

Avennia seek to highlight the very best vineyards in Washington through traditional techniques, varietals and blends from old world regions such as Bordeaux. The name "Sestina" is a form of medieval French poetry. The concept here is that Avennia take the traditional form prescribed to them by centuries of winemaking in Bordeaux and fill that arrangement with expressions of top vineyard sites here in WA. Avennia pay homage to the Grand Vins of the left bank, but also seek to convey a sense of place that is true to their own locale. The 2016 Sestina is fantastic and perfectly represents the idea behind its name. The nose is very reminiscent of classically styled Bordeaux with lifted floral aromas, cedar, dried tobacco, black and blue fruits, struck rock, and graphite. On the palate there is more generosity to the fruit and texture than the nose might suggest, perhaps owing to the warm growing season in 2016. This plush fruit gives great accessibility at a young drinking age, but don't be fooled by the lush, velvet textured mid-palate, there's plenty of sting in the tail here with a true varietally correct tannin structure that is refined and filigreed. A very deep and complex wine with a lovely broad drinking window to enjoy over the next 20 years depending on your preference. Our special pricing gets this wine right into the sweet spot around $20 a bottle off what you would typically expect to pay. With huge scores and the K&L staff behind it, this one probably won't last long.
