2016 Avennia "Red Willow Vineyard" Yakima Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $100+)

SKU #1476543 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Made from 100% Red Willow Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Willow is another gem from this great winemaker. Deep purple-colored, with a huge perfume of blackberries, crème de cassis, cedarwood, pencil lead, and graphite, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness and depth, nicely integrated acidity, and building, ripe tannins. Give bottles 3-4 years and it too will cruise for 15-20 years or more. Winemaker Chris Peterson continues to fashion some of the most impressive wines in the State. These are always more classical in style and show plenty of acidity and structure in their youth, yet they blossom with just short term cellaring and are brilliant wines. Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark Bursting from the glass with impeccable precision, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Willow Vineyard is the real McCoy, boasting a focused frame of fruit on the nose that shows depth and breadth in layers of aromas—blackberry, dark cherry, licorice and clove-laced spices flutter over a bed of roses. I can't stop smelling this wine! Full-bodied, the wine unfolds and expands across the palate with complexity, tight structure and beautifully managed tannins, ending with a thought-provoking and long-lingering finish. The wine has a still-tight expression that will age beautifully for years to come. It will serve you well to seek out a bottle of this world-class wine. Only 140 cases were made. Outer quote mark This wine is all Cabernet, coming from a single block at this esteemed vineyard. The aromas are locked up on first pour, with notes of cocoa, dried leaf, dark roasted coffee bean and spice emerging over time. The palate is soft and flavorful, showing an exquisite sense of balance and detail to its dark chocolate and earth flavors. Tightly wound tannins give support. The acid and tannin balance is spot on. *Cellar Selection* (SS) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

An absolute blockbuster of a wine. The 2016 Red Willow Cab from Avennia is nothing short of brilliant. Selected from a prime block of this legendary old-vine Cabernet planting in the Yakima Valley. What a great example of just how spectacular Washington State Bordeaux varietal wines can be. Layer upon layer of dense black and purple fruit, cassis, blackberry, elderberry compote, crushed flowers and singed cedar. Savory notes of graphite, crushed rock, leather and espresso. This is a big, mouth-filling wine with considerable structure, but it's not aggressive or astringent as the volume of fruit abounds and tannin management is perfect. Easy to compare with (and probably mistake for) top notch left bank Bordeaux with its deep, complex, flavors and rocky minerality. I think it will likely be just as long lived as some of it's Bordelais cousins too, a 20+ year wine for sure. This wine isn't typically available outside of the winery as it's such a limited production, however we took their remaining inventory at a smoking good price.
