K&L Notes

The Choblet family established their vineyards in 1945 in what would become the Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu appellation. Now three generations deep, brothers Herve and Nicolas Choblet work together from vine to bottle to make some of the most interesting and dynamic Muscadets in the region. The vines are planted on a mix of mica-schist but mostly granitic soils, lending brilliant mineral tones to the wine. It is aged in tank for 8 months sur lie before bottling. Some moules frites, s'il vous plaît!

The 2018 Haut Bourg Muscadet was an outstanding success and the 2019 is a stellar follow-up. Thinking of any Muscadet evokes ideas of steamed shellfish, fresh cracked crab and plate loads of oysters. Muscadet is one of a handful of wines that have the sinewy frame of tense acidity balanced by a rich mouthfeel. Chablis fits but you'd easily pay two to three times the price for an equivalent wine. That's why I love the Haut Bourg Muscadet. Each year this wines delivers an immense rush of creamy apple and peach tones driving toward a flinty mineral finish. It is long and persistent in the mouth and keeps me bringing the glass up for another sip. And, with that frame of acid, will even develop for a few years. But why wait, really? This is such an engaging white and for under $15 a bottle, it will easily be one of the best buys of 2021!
