2014 Saxon Brown "Fighting Brothers" Sonoma Valley Zinfandel

SKU #1475350 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Deep garnet in color, the 2014 Zinfandel Fighting Brothers offers an abundance of black fruit preserves and blueberry pie notes plus underlying spice cake, incense and chocolate box hints. The richly fruited, full-bodied palate is packed with dried berries and spice layers, framed by velvety tannins and much needed freshness, which contributes a lively lift to the weighty finish. (LPB) Inner quote mark (2/2017)

K&L Notes

Winery notes: "The grapes were harvested in the early morning hours and transported immediately to the winery. In the cellar, the grapes were de-stemmed into an open-top fermenter (95% whole berry), cold-soaked for 48 hours, and inoculated with a low rate of yeast to allow the wild yeast to have an effect before the cultured yeast takes over. All lots were co-fermented to maximize the complexity and harmony of the blend. After fermentation, the wine was pressed to new and one year old French barrels for 11 months aging."

This is a one time price, 50% off this stunning bottle of Zin from top flight producer, Saxon Brown. The Fighting Brothers bottling is crafted in homage to winemaker, Jeff Gaffner's two sons. The wine is an intriguing blend of old vine and young vine Zinfandel. As Jeff explains the old vines (a Zin dominant field blend) give depth and complexity where as the younger vines give bright, vibrant fruit and purity. This is a big, rich wine with lots of dark, ripe, liquored fruit notes, scorched earth, toasted spices and dried floral tones. Very full-bodied with soft, silky tannins and a big saturated feel on the palate. This is hedonistic stuff done right. With a great 93 point review from Parker's Wine Advocate this is a deal that's sure to evaporate quickly. If you love big, rich, dark fruited Zin, grab this fast.

This is akin to sticking your nose into a jar of blackberry jam. Legs for days. A mouthfeel like a lighter port. Grab a knife and a fork and dig in. I loved this wine.
