K&L Notes

"Best’s winery and vineyards are among Australia’s best kept secrets. Indeed the vineyards, with vines dating back to 1866, have secrets that may never be revealed: for example, one of the vines planted in the Nursery Block has defied identification and is thought to exist nowhere else in the world. Part of the cellars too, go back to the same era, constructed by butcher-turned-winemaker Henry Best and his family. The Thomson family has owned the property since 1920, with Ben, the 5th generation, having taken over management from father Viv. Best’s consistently produces elegant, supple wines; the Bin No. 0 is a classic, the Thomson Family Shiraz (largely from vines planted in 1867) is magnificent. Very occasionally a pinot meunier (with 15% pinot noir) is made solely from 1868 plantings of those 2 varieties; there is no other pinot meunier of this vine age made anywhere else in the world. Justin Purser brings with him a remarkable CV with extensive experience in Australia, NZ and Burgundy. In the Wine Companion 2017 Best’s was awarded the mantle of Wine of the Year from a field of almost 9000 wines; in 2021 they were Best Value Winery. " - James Halliday, Wine Companion

The tiny sub-region of Great Western was established as a subzone of Grampians in 2007, but wine production here dates back over a century and a half when Best’s was founded in 1865. The limestone soils and chilly climate convinced early winegrowers that they could make sparkling wine in the style of Champagne, but today nearly 90% of this subregion is dedicated to Shiraz. The 2017 Best's "Bin No.1" Shiraz puts that cool-climate fruit on display with powerful acidity and focused fruit. But the limestone soils give this a darker edge with more concentrated black fruit flavors of plum, black tea, and black cherry notes. For a winery that has been established for over 150 years, this is strikingly modern, clean, and full of distinctive edges. The tuxedo of Shiraz.
