On the origins of Massican, the winery notes: "Inspired by our roots in Italy, the Massican wines are made in Napa Valley, California. Massican is named after Monte Massico (the Massican hills), the coastal mountain range in southern Italy where our founders are from. In California we cultivate six white wine grape varieties in and around Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Four of the grape varieties trace their origins to Italy – Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Bianco and Greco. Two of the grape varieties, although no strangers to Italy, are more widely known throughout the world – Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. From these California grapes we make four distinct wines, each channeling the Italian style of refreshing Mediterranean white wines."

This Sauvignon Blanc immediately drew my attention in with its fragrant complexity of orange blossoms, lychee, lemon rind, wet river stone and hints of ocean brine. While the texture only solidifies even further the attention to detail and quality of this wine with the laser sharp focus, and mouthwatering brightness that supports how well this wine will evolve over time. Immensely fresh, and enjoyable now with some time to breathe. But you will definitely be rewarded for your patience if you can hold onto a few bottles over the next few years.

If I could only drink three white wines ever again, I'd select; Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. The Sauvignon Blanc from Massican is the kind of wine that informs that decision. While the world is full of easy and satisfying Sauvignon, there are enough examples to argue how this is one of the most noble of all the white grapes. Dan Petroski puts his heart and soul into crafting top shelf wines inspired by his Italian heritage. This reminds me of the best bottlings of Quarz by Terlan. Few wines give me as much satisfaction and the Massican is a dead ringer from the new world. It takes a few hours to fully open up at this young stage, but once it's there, you're greeted by a symphony of finely tuned flavors. There's sexy waxy lemon rind, green leaf, and a distant hint of tropical fruit. The wine is both taut and expressive (given some air). It's textural and shines with a complex streak of both passion fruit and honeysuckle. I'll be squirreling a few of these away in my locker and maybe a few in the home cupboard. It's a winner!

Tart, and extremely refreshing. Massican always know how to execute their white wines perfectly. Inspired by the white wines of Northern Italy, this wine definitely reminds me of a lot of the crisp acidic whites I've enjoyed there. I'm not necessarily the biggest sauvignon blanc fan, but this wine is truly something special. Have with oysters, or by itself, you will enjoy this regardless. Flavors of lemon, stone fruit, and green apple, packed with zippy acidity, you would be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don't buy a bottle or two...

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.

The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
